To Whom It May Concern thoughts about life as I see it

My (late) Manic Monday

mondaykillinmeDangit.  I missed a day.  I'm a dummy:

  • So this weekend, I attended Advance '09, with speakers like John Piper, Mark Driscoll, and Matt Chandler.  It rocked my world.
  • I took notes during the conference, which you can see here: Day 1, Day 2, and Day 3.  Here is a list of all the audio in once place.
  • I visited The Summit on Sunday, which was awesome!  I love what J.D. Greear is doing.
  • For those who haven't followed anything that Apple has done, on Monday, Apple came out with a new iPhone with Video and updated their MacBook Pro's (which are cheaper now).
  • And I don't care for the iPhone, because AT&T sucks.  And I want to wait until it comes to Verizon.  That would be awesome.
  • Pray for a Pastor who fell into sin that forced him to resign from his position as a Pastor.  Pray for grace to fall on his family and God to lead him through this hard time.
  • Which reminds me, don't think too highly of yourself, you can fall just like the Pastor did.  Seek Christ in everything and be held accountable!
  • I'm living at home until July, when I get to move into a house with some friends from school.   Living at home is cool and all, but it gets old.  Especially since I've lived on my own for so long.  Saving money is nice though.
  • And finally: if you care about sin and getting rid of idols in your life, then listen to this message.

Peace and Love.

Advance ‘09 Notes Day 3

Here are the last two men and the notes I gathered:

Danny Akin: Marks on a healthy community of faith [Watch for the link Here]

  • "What is it that makes the church like heaven? Love."
  • "A healthy community of faith will be a household of hospitality."
  • "Too many churches function like social clubs."
  • "We integrate military, athletics, but we can’t allow the church to look like it will be in heaven?"  Ouch.

9 distinguishing marks of a healthy community of faith:

1.    Consistently love each other (phileo)
2.    We will care for those who are in need
3.    Honor the divine institution of the marriage
4.    An unshakable faith in the providence of God
5.    Respect those who teach the word and shepherd their souls
6.    Will not be moved away from Christ-centered doctrine
7.    Characterized by thanksgiving, praise, and service
8.    Will cultivate a ministry of prayer for it’s leaders
9.    Will look to Jesus as the good shepherd that will lead them to good works

John Piper: Let the Nations be Glad Part 2 [Watch for the link Here]

  • "Missions is a means to the goal of bringing people to worship Him."
  • "Worship is the fuel and the goal of missions."
  • "The world doesn’t like to feel small, but they go to mountains and they feel different, they feel small.  They’re tasting what they were made for with an emblem of God in the mountains."
  • "Prayer is tapping into the power that wields the sword of the word."
  • "You cannot know what prayer is for until you know that life is war."
  • "There is no vacation from war, there is only relief in the end."
  • "Don't let your theology get in the way of the Bible."

If you care about the future of the Church, then listen to these men speak about it.  I have been encouraged by the wisdom of these speakers at Advance '09.

Advance ‘09 Notes Day 2

Here are just some of the notes that I was able to write down while listening to these men:

Ed Stetzer: Keys to Understanding the Church and Kingdom [Listen Here]

  • "Challenge to the missional. Adopt an unreached people group."
  • "Get over your man-crush on Mark Driscoll & love the church you are in, not the church in your head."
  • "We are the only continent in the world where the church is not growing."
  • "Too many people are believing in their stuff instead of their Savior."
  • "A church without a kingdom mission is as useless as a systematic theology textbook at Joel Osteen's church, and I think he'd be okay with me saying that."
  • "Recent research claims that 44% of the unchurched said Christians get on their nerves.  44% of the Christians I know get on my nerves!"

J.D. Greear: Planting is for wimps: Revisiting a Church around the Gospel [Listen Here]

  • "Religious people love recognition, they love the praise of people."
  • "Religion makes us horribly inefficient evangelists."
  • "Religious people substitute religious rituals for a love for God."
  • quoting D.A. Carson, "Error is truth out of proportion."
  • "Religious people reduce God to a set of duties."
  • "Religious people elevate religious things over loving others."
  • "Religious people don't show mercy because they think that when other people mess up, they get what they deserve."

Eric Mason: The Ultimate Shepherd [Listen Here]

  • "We have a lack of patience in the church."
  • "I have changed from calling God his royal highness to his flyness."
  • "The subtlety of false humility can often make us focus on ourselves instead of our Redeemer."
  • "Christians are more mad at the church than they are lost people."
  • "We have made the doctrine of Depravity an idol. There is a subtlety to false humility that takes the focus off God." wow
  • "We can't wish for stuff in our context that the gospel hasn't done to us yet."

Mark Driscoll: Ministry Idolatry [Link Here]

  • "When you idolize things you also demonize those who disagree with you." i.e. Calvinism, Armenianism
  • "Religion is what people do for God. Regeneration is what God does in, through, for, with and in spite of people."
  • It's not about "seven steps to this, a sermon about how to be all you can be, [or] live your best life now," he said. "It's about Jesus."
  • "Much of what constitutes Christianity is not what we do but what we receive.  That's how you become a Christian – you stop doing and you receive what Christ has done."
  • "It's weird when 20yr old guys try to sound like John Piper, its even weirder when they try to dress like him."
  • "Idols are often good things turned into God things, which is a bad thing."
  • "It's a shame that some denominations denounce alcohol but idolize gluttony.  I won't name any denominations."
  • "Comfort food can be a form of idolatry."
  • "Repentance is not what you preach, but what you practice."
  • "Some churches present Jesus as a great idol giver. 'Come to Jesus and he'll give you _____.'"
  • "For some, uniqueness and creativity becomes their idol."
  • "If you don't repent, you're a heretic."
  • "Some of you guys are heretics."

John Piper: Let the Nations be glad: Part 1 [Link Here]

  • "If Jesus isn't known the Holy Spirit won't make up for that. He's not a preacher."
  • "Missions is not being invited. If there's someone to invite you, it's not a mission field."
  • "'Nations' doesn't mean 220+ political states, but 16,000+ ethnolinguistic peoples."
  • During Q&A, the panel was asked how can leaders who see Piper, Driscoll, and other leaders as idols be seen more as people: "People are only impressive from a distance. If you think too highly of me, just talk to my wife."
  • "The human heart was made for pursuing God's global mission, not merely being missional in your city"
  • "Just as one man (Adam) undid humanity, so God's remedy for all peoples—everywhere—is the one man Jesus."
  • "This is such a tragic thought in the West- We don't need to send missionaries anymore, just send your money and watch the movies."

I hope you guys are able to get a little something from these notes.  I sure did.

Notes for Advance ‘09 Day 1

Here are some notes that I have taken from the first day of Advance '09:

Mark Driscoll: What is the Church? [Listen Here]

Eight Marks of a Church

  1. Regenerate Believers
  2. Qualified Leadership
  3. Gathering for preaching and worship
  4. Sacraments are done
  5. Unified by the Spirit
  6. Discipline for holiness
  7. Obey the great commandment to love
  8. Obey the great commission

Also, he had these tidbits to say:

  • "Spending only time with Christians can lead to koinonitus."
  • "Don't be so creative you become a heretic; I would rather be faithful than cool."
  • "If you don't have unbelievers coming to your church, it may be because you don't talk about Jesus or you have Sunday school."
  • The Church is to:

    • Be Gathered and Scattered
    • Be Attractional and Missional
    • Be Connecting the Sermons to small groups
    • Not confuse biblical principles with cultural methods

Tyler Jones: The Resurgence of the Church [Listen Here]

  • "Our response to the Church is all wrong.  We don't love the body like we love should love our physical bodies."
  • "Love the body, make it healthy."
  • "Longterm active repentance is what the church needs. Paul suffers for Jesus for a long-term, so should we."
  • "The Church is the vehicle that takes Jesus to the World."
  • "Because we are only dealing with secondary issues, the bleeding of the church has turned into hemorrhaging."

Bryan Chappell: Communicating the Gospel through preaching [Listen Here]

  • "The message, 'Be good' damns people.  Only God is good."
  • "The Bible tars every single person in the Bible except Jesus. that's the point, to point to Jesus."
  • The notes for this are here [pdf]

Matt Chandler: Preaching the Gospel to the De-churched [Listen Here]

  • "If you're opening your mouth & talking about God, you are theological."
  • "The only reason sin has any power in your life is because you love it."
  • "It's funny, you have too many guys trying to become something, when the Bible talks about being nothing."
  • "There has to be a recovery of the understanding of the holy doctrine of the Holy Spirit."
  • "How do you develop a lifestyle of repentance? Preach the cross."
  • "What many of us need to repent of is the love of ministry. We love doing ministry more than we love the Kingdom."

Overall, it was a great first day, being able to hear these men in person and what they have to say.  Look for more notes online, and if you have twitter, follow the #advance09 hashtags for real-time information regarding the Advance '09 conference.
